Fruit Themed Makeup & Skincare Focus Series: Watermelon

Watermelon is a well known wonderful summer “super fruit” that is hydrating as well as refreshing and with the continuing trend of fruit in makeup and skincare products and the heat of the summer, its a good product ingredient to have around for many purposes besides eating.  With August 3rd being National “Watermelon Day” its a good time to indulge in this amazing “super fruit” this month.

The benefits of watermelon are uncountable and can be used for all skin types that can brighten your complexion with vitamins C and A as well as ultra-hydrating with it being 92% water. It has photo nutrients with lots of lycopene, antioxidants, healthy collagen, AHAs, (alpha hydroxy acids), amino acids, citrulline, etc… Watermelon has been around as a Korean and Asian skin care regimen for centuries with Korean grandmothers that used to rub watermelon rind on their children’s and grand children’s faces to protect and hydrate their skin. The properties are also endless providing exfoliation, circulation, anti-inflammatory, reduces oil, and protects from ultraviolet rays as well as preventing pollution damage to your skin. It reduces redness, improves texture and tone of the skin, break outs, draws out skin toxins, and removes dead skin cells.

Fruit essences, juices, and seeds, etc… and ingredients of the watermelon started with the Korean skincare boom that became a huge hit in America putting the “glass skin” look on the map and began the “K-beauty skincare age like wildfire.  Korean women have some of the most beautiful skin in the world and no wonder it took hold here.  One of the most popular fruits (besides the cucumber) in skincare is the watermelon.  As far as skincare there are lip balms, hydrating mists, eye patches, sleeping masks, multi-sticks, lipsticks, cleansers & scrubs, facial wipes, brightening serums, face masks, body lotions, face milks, body butters and sorbets, eye creams, and shower gels. What you want to look for in watermelon products are the products that have watermelon extracts, essences, and oils in them not fragrance which can be harsh and irritating to the skin.

There are so many products that have watermelon in them from makeup to skincare varying from lip balms to eyeshadow palettes to eye patches with all of them having some kind of watermelon essence in them.  Some of the first products we started seeing in skincare came from the brand Glow Recipe with their “Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist”, “Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask”, and “Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer” just to name a couple.  A couple of the other “K-Beauty brands that took hold in the U.S. are Peach & Lily’s “Watermelon Glass Skin Refining Serum and Yesto’s “Watermelon Super Fresh Gel Mask”.  Also, for other American brands there is Milk Makeups “Watermelon Brightening Serum Stick”, Colourpops  sister brand Fourth Ray’s “Watermelon Face Milk”, ELF’s “Jelly Pop” Cleansers, and Moisturizers just to name a few more.

There is also Ulta’s “Watermelon Body Sorbet” and Walmart’s Earth To Skin “Super Fruit” products like the “Watermelon Hydrating Serum” (which I also just discovered and have come to love.  It is intensely hydrating so oily skin types might want to consider their skin type).  There are even hydrogel eye patches like Ciate’s “Watermeolon Burst Hydrating Eye Patches” and fragrance “mists” like Bath & Body Work’s “Watermelon Lemonade Fragrance Mist”.

For makeup products there are eyeshadow palettes, blush, glimmer lipsticks, multi-sticks, setting sprays, and fragrances, etc… Some are the Ilia cosmetics brand with its “Organic Multi-Sick in the shade “All OF Me Watermelon”, Macs Fix Plus’s “Watermelon Setting Spray”, Bobbi Brown’s “Pot Rouge For Cheeks & Lips” in the shade “Fresh Watermelon”, Winky Lux’s “Matcha & Watermelon Glimmer Balm”, the Milani Nourishing Lipsticks in”Pink Frost”, ELF’s new “Bite Size Face Duos” in the shade “Watermelon”, and of course Too Faced’s “Tutti Frutti” watermelon collection like the “Watermelon Slice Face & Eye Palette that looks and smells like watermelon (like the famous scented eyeshadow palettes that Too Faced is legendary and known for), the “Hangover Spray Watermelon Edition”, the “Juicy Fruits Watermelon Lip Glosses”, and “Dew You Fresh Glow Setting Spray”.

For unique water melon products there is the Pacifica brand (that I just recently discovered and have come to love) and their “Watermelon Crystals Targeted Face Mask”, Farmhouse Fresh’s “Fresh Melon Body Milk Lotion”, and even hand sanitizer (great to have now) with Touchland’s “Watermelon Power Mist Hand Sanitizer”.  Some other cute watermelon themed items are some really cute waterproof makeup bags (that are great for summer to take to the pool, lake, or beach as well as easy to clean and protects your makeup) like the company Tools and Claires “Neon Transparent Watermelon Bag”, as well as the Shains brand with the really cute pink flamingo and watermelon clear makeup bag.

So, whatever your favorite watermelon kick for the summer, there is definitely a product out there for you that’s within in your price range that you can discover or come to love even more and can use this summer and for many summers to come!
